Design Technology
Design Technology Rationale
Through teaching design technology we aim to provide our pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an interactive process of designing and making. We aim to provide our pupils with experiences of creativity and imagination, designing and making products that solve real and relevant problems.
At Tividale Community Primary School, design technology is about learning how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Alongside specific design technology knowledge and vocabulary, pupils will develop their critical thinking and a deepening understanding of product development, appropriate to their developmental stage.
To be designers we believe pupils should;
- Have a passion for design technology to become engaged, inspired and challenged.
- Explore and evaluate the work of craftspeople/crafts from the past and practising designers, understanding the cultural and historical development of their product as starting point for their own design journey.
- Build a creative diary documenting a yearly journey.
- Have confidence and competence in experimenting with designing and making prototypes and products for a purpose.
- Have confidence to plan, design, test and evaluate a product based on a brief.
- Understand and apply the principles of nutrition when learning to cook and create recipes.
- Be provided with opportunities to undertake visits to technology museums, exploring a range of products.
Our design technology curriculum encourages pupils to be curious, ask questions and make their own suggestions about product design. Exploration is a vital part of pupil learning and the teaching and learning of design technology will be done through the use of first-hand practical experiences.
Here at Tividale, we embrace the saying, ‘If you dream, you can achieve’ and we encourage our children to do this through design technology.
