Mathematics

Through teaching maths, we aim to equip all pupils with the skills and confidence to solve a range of problems through fluency with numbers and mathematical reasoning. Children are encouraged to see the mathematics that surrounds them every day and enjoy developing vital life skills in this subject. 

To be mathematicians we believe pupils should; 

• Display fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics having the ability to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately. 

• Think and reason mathematically, applying skills fluently and efficiently. 
• Use key mathematical vocabulary within justifications for their reasoning. 
• Have an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. 
• Have a resilience to apply their mathematical knowledge to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. 
• Think creatively and make links between mathematical concepts through exploring patterns in the number system, shape, measures and statistics. 

• Demonstrate and use their mathematics confidently within their daily lives. 

Teachers are encouraged to teach children key concepts through the concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach.  By using this approach, key concepts are embedded by the use of concrete apparatus and a hands on approach at the introductory stage.  Once a concept is sufficiently understood from the hands on experience then children can relate them to representations such as diagrams or pictures of the problem.  With the understanding of a concept now embedded children are now capable of representing problems by using mathematical notation. 

Our maths curriculum enables pupils to develop an appreciation of the power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.  Pupils are encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice and observe both practically and conceptually.
