Science

Through teaching Science we aim to provide our pupils with the foundations to explore, discover and understand the world around them.  

At Tividale Community Primary School, science is about enabling our pupils to experience and observe phenomena in the natural and humanly-constructed world.  

To be Scientists we believe pupils should; 

• be provided with opportunities to think independently and raise questions about working scientifically and the knowledge and skills that it brings. 
• have confidence and competence in the full range of practical skills, taking the initiative in, for example, planning and carrying out scientific investigations.  
• have excellent scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding, which is demonstrated in written and verbal explanations, solving challenging problems and reporting scientific findings. 
• have high levels of originality, imagination or innovation in the application of skills. 
• be provided with opportunities to undertake practical work in a variety of contexts, including fieldwork. 

• have a passion for science and its uses and implications in past, present and future technologies. 

Our Science curriculum encourages pupils to be curious and ask questions about what they notice and observe and helps them to develop their understanding of scientific ideas by using different types of enquiry to answer their own questions. 

Exploration is a vital part of pupil learning and the teaching and learning of science will be done through the use of stimulating and challenging first-hand practical experiences whenever possible. 

Alongside specific scientific knowledge and vocabulary pupils will develop the concept of ‘working scientifically’ appropriate to their developmental stage. 

In the EYFS, Science is not taught as a specific subject but is a key part of the Understanding the World area of the curriculum. It is also integral to many areas of daily exploration, learning and play.
